Villa, Zurich
Sculpture made of stone, metal and glass
Year constructed: 2014
The villa is enthroned on a steep slope above the city of Zurich. Closed to the slope and opening to the permanently unobstructed view of the lake basin and the Alps, the interlocking building cubes play with their surroundings to generate exciting vistas. The reduction of both design and materials to their essence creates a maximum of elegance.
The outer, volume-forming façade of light limestone is complemented in the recesses and niches by artfully perforated dark metal panels. These can be alternately opened for transparency or closed, creating different levels in the façade structure. In combination with the spacious picture windows, a homogeneous recessed level is created.
The interior spaces flow into one another both horizontally and vertically through openings, galleries and two-storey rooms. The building’s centrepiece is its access to the spaces via two free-floating dark metal staircases. The terraced lawn forms a suitable counterpart to the architecture on different levels, creating a symbiosis of exterior and interior.
