The terrace construction in Schindellegi’s «Lake Side» development performs an unusual balancing act to accommodate seemingly contradictory elements: providing serenity and security for the residents despite the location on a busy road in the middle of the village centre. The high-quality construction with its impressive and elegant vaulting consists of comfortable rental flats in the long building, offices in the vertical structure and commercial studios on the ground floor. The architecture has a clear horizontal structure on the lake side due to the ceiling slabs and is very openly executed through large glass surfaces. To mitigate noise emissions, the building was deliberately closed off to the extent possible on the uphill side. The façade system is based on the Arabic building culture tradition of multiple layers. The façade of the residential and commercial building is composed of three levels. In addition to providing noise protection, this layered structure also has the function of ensuring privacy and opportunities for solitude and serving as an illustration of restrained elegance as a design element.
