Terrace house, Meilen

The narrow plot is nestled in the beautiful landscape high above the community of Meilen. The sloping hillside and neighbouring vineyard lend an air of space, freedom and seclusion. The special nature of this setting as well as the rules governing the site’s location suggested the concept of a terraced house.
It was important that the implementation of the "stepping down" of the residential house be accomplished in a playful manner. The aim was to give each floor optimal privacy, plenty of sunlight and large outdoor terraces. The top floors were designed as maisonettes; the middle and lower flats were pulled out onto the slope. The shared car park and cellar or ancillary rooms are located below the residential units.
Depending on the weather, the sheet metal façade appears to shimmer from light to dark. Together with the plasterwork, horizontally oriented metal sheeting, cedar wood panelling and natural stone coverings form the grounded ensemble, which also has a floating quality due to the overall horizontal accentuation of the encircling terrace.
